Donald G. Couillard, age 71, passed away from cancer on February 3, 2019. He came into this world in a car on a bridge on the way to a hospital in Chippewa Falls, WI on November 7, 1947. He graduated from Madison East High School. Don was a Vietnam Veteran who served in the U.S. Navy for four years.
He married Jayne L. Mittenzwei on August 14, 1971 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Sauk City. They later moved to Marshall, WI and became members of St. Mary's Catholic Church. They enjoyed life in the country for 45 years and had 3 children. Don could often be found in the garden or on his ATV and always enjoyed spending time with family, relatives and friends.
He worked for the State of Wisconsin for 37 years. After retiring, he worked as a custodian at St. Joseph's Catholic School in Waterloo. He also worked for the Colonial Club Senior Activity Center in Sun Prairie as the night custodian and ran their senior meal sites in Marshall and Deerfield. He was a member of the American Legion Post #279 for 25 years and a life member of the Marshall/Waterloo V.F.W. Post #6614. He served in the honor guard of both organizations.
During his lifetime, Don especially enjoyed spending time on a lake or in the woods. As often as possible, he went fishing, ice fishing, and deer hunting. He liked playing cribbage or sheepshead and watching the stock car races in Jefferson. Throughout the years, he was a member of softball and bowling teams and played on the Prairie Dartball League for almost 40 years, serving as St. Mary's team captain.
Don was preceded in death by his parents Leo "Jack" Couillard and Myrtle Couillard-Baumbach, and his in-laws, Art and Tillie Mittenzwei.
He is survived by his wife Jayne Couillard of 47 years; his daughter Amy Couillard of Beloit, son Scott Couillard of Sun Prairie; and daughter Krista (Dan) O'Connor of Coon Rapids, MN. He has 2 granddaughters, Anna Couillard and Danielle O'Connor.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at St. Mary of the Nativity Catholic Church, 112 S. Beebe St. in Marshall. Father Jorge Miramontes will preside. A visitation will be held from 9:00 am until the time of Mass on Saturday at the church.
The family would like to thank the Red Team of Agrace Hospice Care for their compassionate care during his illness. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Agrace Hospice Care or the Madison Chapter of Fishing Has No Boundaries.
